This explains it...

Ryan has had a cough for about 10 days now. It went away totally for a few days and then came back with a vengance on Thursday. I decided to call the doctor and we took him in last night. Our appointment was at 7:40--ten minutes after Ryan goes to bed, but I felt like we needed to get him in.
The doctor listened to his breathing very closely and it seemed like she listened for a long time. She said it sounds like he has a mild case of asthma that might only flare up when he has a cold. This might be why it takes him so long to get over a cough. Anyway, this was obviously not what I wanted to hear, but at least there is a remedy. So, we are doing nebulizer treatments with the albuterol twice a day until the cough is gone, and will probably need to do this with every cold.
Poor little guy! He hates the mask with the inhaler, but doesn't mind the nebulizer at all, so at least that makes it a little easier.

Jenna has a nebulizer because she gets croup very easily. When we have to use it, we usually have to alternate Albuterol with Steroids. She never liked having the mask, but the Dr. told us just to hold it infront of her face (not the mask, but the straight tube)and that it will blow in her face, enough for her to breathe it in. Maybe this will work better for you?
Good luck.

Malachi has to have the mask when his colds settle in his chest. He hates it, too, but if there are two of us we can get it over with pretty quickly. Also the crying guarantees that he is actually breathing it in...I guess that's good! :) Hope his cough goes away quickly!!

Thanks for the tips! We don't let Ryan watch TV, but we do let him when he has to do the nebulizer. Today, he wanted to hold the tube himself--right in front of his mouth!
